What to do when your dog keeps shedding fur on your furniture

Your dog may well be your best friend, but that doesn’t mean that constant shedding doesn’t get annoying. If your favorite couch is always covered in fur, or you can’t seem to eliminate hair from your home even if you vacuum all the time, this guide is for you. Here are some useful tips for shedding fur on your furniture.

Keeping your furniture fur-free

Dogs malt, and some shed fur on what seems like a continual basis. One of the most challenging tasks for homeowners who have pets is keeping their home fur-free. Thankfully, there are steps you can take to protect your furniture and keep pet hair at bay.

  • Brushing and grooming

Dogs clean themselves, but they’re not as proficient in grooming as cats. It’s a good idea to brush your dog on a regular basis, especially if your pooch has a wiry or long coat. Dogs tend to shed more fur as temperatures rise, so brush them more frequently in the spring and summer. Regular grooming can help to reduce shedding and keep your dog’s coat looking healthy and glossy. If you have a dog with fur that tends to get matted very easily, you may benefit from taking your pup to a grooming parlor.

  • Keep your dog hydrated

Dogs who have a dry diet are more prone to shedding, so hydration is key. Make sure your dog has access to a bowl of fresh water at all times, and consider adding moisture to their diet. Look for healthy pet food options and mix dry food with meat, vegetables, and fish in jelly or gravy.

  • Bathing

Washing your dog can help to reduce matting and smooth the fur. If your dog is prone to shedding, ask your vet for recommendations for shampoos and look for products that are designed to reduce fur loss. Be gentle when you wash your dog and brush them afterwards.

  • Covers

It’s no secret that dogs love to curl up on the sofa and catch 40 winks. If you have a couch you’re keen to preserve and protect, and you don’t want to relocate your faithful friend, buying covers is a solution. Your dog can lie on a blanket, enabling them to get comfortable while you have peace of mind that your sofa will remain a fur-free zone.

  • Vacuum cleaning

If you have a dog, it’s useful to invest in a powerful vacuum cleaner that is capable of dealing with a continuous flurry of fur. You can use the nozzle head to target hard to reach areas and remove fur from sofas and couches. It’s also useful to use sticky rollers to pick up stray hairs.

Even though you love your dog, it can be frustrating to feel like your home and your clothes are constantly covered in fur. To minimize shedding, protect your furniture and keep your home as clean and fresh as possible, groom, bathe and brush your dog on a regular basis, add moisture to your dog’s diet, and place covers on your couches.
